Championship formats

1955-1991 The first draw of the 1955/56 Cup was a single-elimination tournament, where each round was played in two matches (home and away). Until 1992, the national champions and the last winner of the European Champions Cup participated in the draw.
1992-2024 Starting from the 1991-92 season, the format of the tournament was changed, a group round was included, and the following year the tournament changed its name, becoming the Champions League. This was followed by several changes in the number of qualification stages and the structure of the groups.
2024- N.D. Starting from the 2024/25 season, 36 clubs will participate in the general stage of the Champions League (former group stage), which will give four more teams the opportunity to compete with the best teams in Europe. According to the new format, the teams will play eight matches at the general stage (the former group stage). They will no longer play with three opponents twice - at home and away. Instead, each club will play eight matches against eight different teams - four on their own field and four on someone else's.

The European Champion Clubs' Cup or simply the European Cup, is a trophy awarded annually by UEFA to the football club that wins the UEFA Champions League.
